The Village & Pillage update is a major Minecraft release centered around revamping villages, introducing new threats, mobs, blocks, and gameplay mechanics. Released for Java, Bedrock, PlayStation 4, and Education Editions, this update overhauled village generation, added new professions, enhanced trading systems, and brought unique village defenses and raids.

The update’s development began with snapshot 18w43a, and Java Edition 1.14 officially released on April 23, 2019 after several pre-releases. Bedrock Edition rolled out features incrementally across versions 1.8 to 1.11, while PlayStation 4 received the update as 1.91. The official name, Village & Pillage, was revealed during MINECON Earth 2018 on September 29, 2018.

Additions

New Blocks

  • Stairs, Slabs, and Walls – 14 new variations for stairs and slabs including stone, diorite, and polished variants; 12 new walls like prismarine, nether brick, and end stone brick.
  • Campfire – Decorative and functional; cooks up to four foods at once slowly and produces smoke signals when placed on hay bales.
  • Bamboo – Naturally generates in bamboo forests and can be harvested; drops from pandas.
  • Scaffolding – Build tall structures easily; collapses from bottom if the base is removed.
  • Flowers:
    • Cornflower (blue dye)
    • Lily of the Valley (white dye)
    • Wither Rose (inflicts Wither effect)
  • Barrel – Storage block similar to chests; can open in a one-block space.
  • Bell – Decorative, rings when activated or during raids to alert villagers.
  • Blast Furnace – Smelts ores twice as fast as a regular furnace.
  • Smoker – Cooks food faster than a standard furnace.
  • Cartography Table – Used for map cloning, expanding, and locking.
  • Composter – Converts plant-based items into bone meal.
  • Fletching Table – Used by villagers to restock trades (no player functionality).
  • Smithing Table – Used for villager trade restocking; no player use.
  • Stonecutter – Craft stone-related blocks efficiently.
  • Grindstone – Removes non-curse enchantments and repairs items.
  • Lantern – Light source with luminance of 15.
  • Lectern – Holds books for multiple players and emits redstone signals.
  • Loom – Easier banner creation; found in shepherd houses.
  • Jigsaw Block – Technical block for structure templates (Java Edition only).

New Items

  • Banner Patterns – Crafted from paper and other materials for unique designs.
  • Crossbow – Stronger than a bow, slower reload, can shoot fireworks.
  • Dyes – White, blue, brown, black; previous dyes remain functional.
  • Suspicious Stew – Craftable from flowers; restores hunger and applies effects depending on the flower.
  • Sweet Berries – Food harvested from berry bushes.
  • New Spawn Eggs: Cat, Fox, Panda, Pillager, Ravager, Trader Llama, Wandering Trader (Java Edition only).

Mobs

  • Cat – Found in villages or swamp huts; can be tamed, scares phantoms, gives gifts to sleeping owners.
  • Pillager – Hostile illagers wielding crossbows; initiate raids on villages.
  • Ravager – Large bull-like hostile creature; destroys crops and attacks players during raids.
  • Panda – Neutral mobs with varying personalities; spawn in bamboo forests, eat bamboo, and have unique baby animations.
  • Fox – Spawn in taiga biomes, collect dropped items, attack small mobs, can be tamed with sweet berries.
  • Wandering Trader – Randomly spawns with trader llamas; offers biome-specific trades, despawns after 2–3 days.
  • Trader Llama – Accompanies the wandering trader, defends them and attacks hostile mobs.

Enchantments

  • Multishot – Fires three projectiles simultaneously.
  • Quick Charge – Reduces crossbow reload time.
  • Piercing – Projectiles pass through multiple entities.
