Java Edition Beta 1.0

Overview:
Beta 1.0 is the first official version of Java Edition Beta. This release introduced a working server-side inventory, added support for skins and capes, improved gameplay mechanics, and included multiple bug fixes. It marks the transition from Alpha to Beta, with more stable features for multiplayer and survival gameplay.


Additions

Gameplay:

  • Inventory:
    • Fully functional server-side inventory.
    • Tooltips show item names when hovering over them.

General:

  • Skins & Capes:
    • Added support for capes, initially called cloaks.
    • Only the Mojang cape existed at the time, but the system supports all capes.
    • Added support for deadmau5’s ears.
  • Splashes:
    New splash messages include:
    • Finally Beta!
    • Woo, reddit!
    • Twittered about!
    • Jump up, jump up, and get down!
    • Joel is neat!
    • A riddle, wrapped in a mystery!
    • Huge tracts of land!
    • Welcome to your Doom!
    • Stay a while, stay forever!
    • Stay a while and listen!
    • Treatment for your rash!
    • “Noun” is an autonym!
    • Information wants to be free!
    • “Almost never” is an interesting concept!

Changes

Blocks:

  • Chests:
    • Moving too far from a chest or if it explodes closes the inventory screen.
  • Leaves:
    • Leaf decay reintroduced, with new behavior compared to previous versions.

Items:

  • Eggs:
    • Can now be thrown, with a chance to spawn a chicken.
    • Stack size reduced to 16 (from 64).

Gameplay:

  • Inventory:
    • Item names appear when hovering over them.
    • Armor outlines removed from armor slots.
    • Players can no longer store items in crafting grid slots; attempting this drops the items.

General:

  • Multiplayer:
    • Servers save chunks less frequently.
    • Chunks are not resaved if they were saved within the last 30 seconds.
  • Splash Text:
    • Updated “Play Minecraft, Watch Topgear, Get Pig” → “Play Minecraft, Watch Topgear, Get Pig!”
    • Until Beta 1.2_01, “Finally Beta!” is the only regularly shown splash besides seasonal messages.
  • Controls:
    • Key settings buttons have updated appearance.

Fixes

  • Fixed multiple bugs related to server-side inventory.
  • Fixed the /kill command.
  • Tools thrown on the ground no longer repair themselves automatically.
