Minecraft Java Edition – Classic (2009)

Java Edition Classic represents a key development phase of Minecraft, spanning from the Private Alpha to Late Classic. This phase was the first to see publicly released versions, following Pre-Classic and preceding Indev. Initially, the phase was referred to as “Alpha” by Notch, hence the “a” in early version numbers, until June 28, 2010, when it was retroactively named Minecraft Classic. During this period, Creative and early Survival modes were introduced.

Overview

  • Starting version: mc-161607 (May 16, 2009)
  • Latest version: 0.30 (November 10, 2009)
  • Paid: No
  • Mode availability: Creative and limited Survival
  • Website: Initially playable on Minecraft.net for free; later removed as the game evolved

Classic versions lacked many modern features such as crafting or a full inventory system. Creative mode remained the primary building mode, and it was heavily relied upon until Beta 1.8 introduced Creative mode again, rendering Classic mostly obsolete.
