Development History
Creation / Pre-Classic
Minecraft’s origin traces back to Notch drawing inspiration from Infiniminer, Dwarf Fortress, and Dungeon Keeper. Initially dubbed a “cave game,” the first video appeared on YouTube on May 13, 2009. The working title Minecraft: Order of the Stone was suggested by a forum user but later shortened to Minecraft. The first private single-player alpha released on May 16, 2009.
Classic
- Public Release: May 17, 2009 (Version 0.0.11a)
- Only featured Creative Mode, allowing unlimited blocks.
- A multiplayer test was added before the Survival Test.
- Rewritten in LWJGL in July 2009.
Survival Test
- Released: September 1, 2009

- Added complex lighting, day-night cycles, food, torches, and fire.
